World Mental Health Day: A Message to Mississippi’s Service Members and Veterans

Every year on October 10, World Mental Health Day serves as a reminder of the importance of mental health, open conversations, and making sure people know they do not have to face difficult seasons alone.

For our Service Members and Veterans, that message is especially important.

Military service requires strength, discipline, adaptability, and sacrifice. But being strong does not mean carrying everything on your own.

Deployments, time away from family, balancing military and civilian responsibilities, transitioning out of service, financial concerns, employment uncertainty, and adjusting to a new chapter of life can all bring challenges that others may not always see.

Sometimes support begins with a conversation.

Check on Your People

This World Mental Health Day, take a moment to check on someone in your life.

Call the friend you haven't heard from lately. Check on someone who recently returned from deployment. Reach out to the Veteran adjusting to civilian life. Ask a fellow Service Member how things are really going, and take the time to listen to the answer.

And while you're checking on everyone else, remember to check on yourself too.

Seeking support when you need it is just as important as being there for the people around you.

Taking Care of What Comes Next

Mental well-being can be affected by many areas of life, including uncertainty about employment and what comes next after military service.

If your career is one of the things weighing on you, Work for Warriors Mississippi is here to help with that piece. Whether you're currently serving, deployed, preparing to transition, or already a Veteran, our team can help you prepare for your next career opportunity.

You don't have to wait until you're out of the military or unemployed to reach out. WFWMS can assist with resumes, interview preparation, career guidance, employment opportunities, and connections with employers.

You Are Not Alone

On World Mental Health Day, we encourage Mississippi's military community to continue looking out for one another, having honest conversations, and reaching out when support is needed.

Your health matters. Your future matters. And you do not have to navigate every challenge on your own.
