Honoring Those Who Serve
Today, on Veterans Day, we come together to honor the extraordinary men and women who protect our nation. Across the state, communities are honoring veterans in Mississippi with gratitude for their bravery, sacrifice, and selflessness. This day gives us time to reflect on their dedication and the freedoms their courage protects.
The History Behind Veterans Day
The history of Veterans Day dates back to the end of World War I, a global conflict that changed the course of history. On that day, November 11, 1918, the world rejoiced as fighting ceased, marking the armistice that led to peace. The following year, November 11 was declared Armistice Day to honor the courage and sacrifice of those who fought in The Great War. Later in 1954, after the United States fought in World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honor all who served.
Veterans Day honors the men and women who have proudly worn the uniform of the United States Armed Forces. Unlike Memorial Day, which remembers those who gave their lives, this day celebrates the living heroes who continue to safeguard our freedom. It remains one of the most meaningful observances for communities across Mississippi.
Each veteran’s story reminds us of the sacrifices made for the greater good. From deployment abroad to challenges at home, these brave individuals show true honor and resilience. Their experiences shape who they are. Work for Warriors MS is proud to help them succeed as they transition to civilian life.
